Raising his voice on the recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act, Samajwadi Party leader Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav has demanded an emergency session of the Parliament to make amendments in the mentioned law. He said either amend the law or revoke it.

As quoted by ANI, He said, “I demand that an emergency session of Parliament should be called. Amendments should be made to the Citizenship Amendment Act to see that no discrimination is done based on religion or the Act should be revoked. Citizenship should not be based on religion.” He further added that he had raised the issue regarding the bill when it was introduced in the Parliament. He said that the Citizenship bill is a potential threat as it can cut off the Northeast states from the rest of India.

The nation is witnessing wide protests all over its geography ever since the Citizenship bill was tabled and passed.  On Sunday, many students of the Jamia Milia University staged a protest over the bill. It was then alleged that the students were beaten up by the police personnel for creating disturbance and hurling stones.

Expressing his mind over the protest, Ram Gopal Yadav said that the students of Jamia University were protesting peacefully. He added, “Then some vehicles were burnt somewhere else by unknown people. After that, the students were beaten by the police. This invited reactions. As a result, there were protests in Aligarh and Lucknow.”  The leader said that that it is the Constitution that has given the right to protest peacefully, then how can police did lathi charge and beat students?

Earlier on Monday, Congress party also extended its support to the Jamia Milia students over the protest-incident. Party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sat on a ‘symbolic protest’ at the India Gate on Monday with many of her party leaders including, Ghulam, Nabi Azad,  KC VenugopalAhmed Patel, PL Punia, former Defence Minister AK Antony and national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.
