Fuchsia OS

Google is working on an entirely new next-generation operating system called Fuchsia OS. The search engine company has been working on Fuchsia OS for quite some time now, although there hasn’t been any official announcement from Google regarding the availability of the OS. There have been various reports speculating this new OS will replace Android but Google is yet to confirm its position for as an OS for smartphones.

However, Google has confirmed the rumors regarding Fuchsia OS being able to run Android apps. A new change in Android Open Source Project confirms that Fuchsia OS will be able to run Android apps using the Android Runtime.

Android Open Source Project manifest received two repositories related to Fuchsia OS last month. The first-“platform/prebuilts/fuchsia_sdk” contains a pre-built copy of Fuchsia SDK, which would be used to create applications. The second-“device/google/fuchsia” seemed like a device that could use Android Emulator to run Fuchsia OS.

This week there was a change posted on the Android Open Source Project. The change contains a README.md file that has helped in explaining what “device/google/fuchsia” is intended for. It said that Fuchsia will use a specially designed version of Android Runtime to run Android apps. This version of Android Runtime will be installable on any Fuchsia device using a .far file which is Fuchsia’s equivalent of Android’s APK.

A few months ago, it was reported that Huawei is volunteering one of its devices to test Fuchsia. Huawei has been working on making Fuchsia Os run on Kirin 970 powered devices, starting with Honor Play.

Google is smartly availing the information regarding Fuchsia for developers to have an overall idea about the operating system. As there is still time for the final release of Fuchsia, by then independent developers will have time to prepare for the switch.
