Sharing a single platform and powertrains on different cars is becoming quite mainstream these days. Many carmakers in recent times have done that. And to name a few, Volkswagen did it. Hyundai and Kia are doing it. But, now it is time for Mercedes Benz to replicate the same.

The German carmaker is expected to launch the upcoming GLA crossover in India soon. And for people who do not know, it will be sharing its platform, engine, features and powertrain with the recently launched A-Class Limousine. The carmaker is yet to confirm the exact launch date. However, when launched it is going to sell like hot cakes for sure.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mercedes Benz might introduce the updated GLA in India by the fourth quarter, 2021.
  • It will be sharing all the underpinnings with the Mercedes Benz A-Class Limousine.
  • The German carmaker is yet to confirm the exact launch date for the Indian market.

2021 Mercedes Benz GLA

In terms of design, the 2021 GLA looks even sportier than its outgoing counterpart. To begin with, it gets a new pair of LED headlights with DRLs, large air intakes, a revised bumper and an updated diamond-studded grille. Not to forget, the non-functional roof rails and a new set of multi-spoke alloy wheels gives the all-new GLA a muscular look. The rear portion of the updated crossover has been totally revamped just like any other modern Mercedes.

Inside the cabin, the second generation GLA will come equipped with a multi-functional steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging pad and the MBUX infotainment system to name a few. Also, the instrument cluster now comes interconnected to the infotainment system just like the A-Class Limousine.

Details regarding the powertrain are not confirmed yet. However, we still expect the all-new Mercedes Benz GLA to come equipped with a powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Also, a diesel motor that is available on the recently launched A-Class will make its way to India.

Safety features such as multiple airbags, antitheft alarm system, ESP, traction control, active brake assist system, etc. will be available on the upcoming GLA crossover as standard.

Alternatives

In India, Mercedes Benz GLA will go head-on against the likes of BMW X1, Volvo XC40 and upcoming Audi Q3.

BMW X1

BMW X1 is the most exhilarating SUV in this segment. Firstly, it is available with a diesel as well as a petrol engine. And on top of that, it has got some serious SUV kind of look. To be precise, it does not look like a crossover at all. The German carmaker has currently priced it between Rs.37.20 Lakhs to Rs.42.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Specifications

  • Engine – 1998cc (Petrol); 1995cc (Diesel)
  • Power – 192BHP (Petrol); 190BHP (Diesel)
  • Torque – 280Nm (Petrol); 400Nm (Diesel)
  • Price – Rs.37.20 Lakhs to Rs.42.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Volvo XC40

Volvo’s are still underrated in the Indian market. The all-new Volvo XC40 is available in a single fully loaded T4 R-Design variant. Also, there might be no diesel engine on offer. However, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine feels performance-oriented while returning a decent mileage of 15kmpl to 19kmpl in the real world.

Specifications

  • Engine – 1969cc (Petrol)
  • Power – 190BHP
  • Torque – 300Nm
  • Price – Rs.39.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi)
