Volkswagen India has finally launched the locally assembled 2022 Tiguan with an introductory price tag of Rs.31.99 Lakhs (Ex-showroom, Delhi). Surprisingly, the German brand has done everything correct except the pricing that feels slightly inflated. A lot of prospective buyers that Volkswagen could have received will now go for the entry-level variants of Fortuner or Gloster ultimately enjoying the massive road presence.

What’s new?

Volkswagen has done a tremendous job in restyling the outgoing model. The new one looks modern enough with a new twin-slat grille, updated VW logo, reprofiled bumpers and a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels. Also, the headlamp and taillamp assemblies are new to offer a differentiated look when compared to the older range.

Available in seven different exterior shades, including Kings Red, Reflex Silver, Pure White, Nightshade Blue, Oryx White, Dolphin Gret and Deep Black, the new Tiguan is definitely going to offer a personalised experience to each and every customer.

The cabin of the updated SUV feels like a typical Volkswagen affair. Starting with the dashboard, it now sports a new multifunctional steering wheel, 10-inch fully digital driver’s display, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. To make it premium, Volkswagen has also added several modern features such as multiple Type-C charging ports, large panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate and reverse parking camera as standard.

Engine

Under the hood, it comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The overall output from this unit is rated at 190HP and 320Nm making it a decently powered SUV. For transmission duties, Volkswagen has deployed a 7-speed DSG gearbox and this entire unit works together to channel power to all four wheels.

The German brand trying to improve transparency claims that Tiguan returns a mileage of somewhere around 12kmpl. Thankfully, to improve the overall range, they are even offering a larger 60-litre fuel tank.

Electronic Aids

Starting with the interesting bit, the all-new Tiguan is available with four drive modes (terrain-oriented) including – on-road, off-road, snow and individual. For occupants safety, it comes loaded with 6 airbags, ABS, park distance control, hill start-descent assist, electronic locking differential, tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX child seat mounts and ESC among others.

Alternatives

Segment-wise, Volkswagen Tiguan competes with other compact SUVs including Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. However, for this much price, customers can even get the entry-level variants of Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster that are available with 7-seater configuration. Fortuner has been a best seller for a reason. Interestingly, after how Volkwagen has priced the new Tiguan, the demand for this full-size SUV will only rise. Under the hood, the entry-level petrol variants of the Toyota Fortuner are available with a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated engine. However, for a slight premium, the 2.8-litre diesel motor also makes sense. Feature-wise, the 4×2 petrol trim is available with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, LED headlights, alloy wheels and 7 airbags to name a few.
