Kia Motors India, in its first year of operation, has become a challenging brand with a strong sales of 84,903 units in just eight months, all set to be a barrier to integration for the future in terms of productivity. Besides, this indicates that the Korean car manufacturer is already opening a second manufacturing facility in the country for the site of a 300,000-unit capacity plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Contrary to rumours, the Anantapur plant, worth the US $ 1.1 billion (approximately Rs 8,400 crore) for scouting, is still the first in the company’s India growth strategy, as the new production centre will not only expand its overall capacity but also help de-risk operations.

Maharashtra is believed to be at the forefront of many Indian states where Kia was discovered. A source familiar with the incident said, “Kia Motors India has a handsome deal from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It is the second plant in another state.” With the spread of Kovid-19, the manufacturing and service sectors have been walloped, and plants in many states in India have served as a buffer during this uncertain time.

With regards to Kia, it also helps the Maharashtra cause, which is a well-established component supplier base and hence the staggering fact that Mumbai has a port advantage. For Kia Motors India, it began export operations with the shipping of 471 Celto’s SUVs from the Port of Chennai to South America, closing the FY2020 with 21,461 vehicle shipments and shipping the PV abroad. The second port proves to be strategically useful. Hyundai, Kia’s sister company, and Kia have both devised a strategic export game-plan to ship improved versions of passenger vehicles made in India. Since launching its export operations in 1999, so far, Hyundai has taken three million cars from its plant near Chennai.

Meanwhile, smart performance in the first year of Kia Motors India has attracted attention from Kia Motors headquarters in Korea. In India, in a tight fiscal year, 84,903 units were sold, with Kia Motors contributing 13.18% of global sales to 6,44,102 units (-0.9%). Besides, if you club the performance of Hyundai and Kia in the domestic market in FY2020, and you can get a 20.54% stake in PV and 27.66% in UV (utility vehicles). The Korean automaker has made a strong start to the rebranding brand in the Indian market.
