Vietnam’s electric vehicle (EV) leader, VinFast, and the Tamil Nadu State Government in India have joined forces to charge the development of green transportation in the world’s third-largest vehicle market. This strategic alliance, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signifies a pivotal step for VinFast’s global expansion and promises to fuel a clean mobility revolution in India.
The ambitious project entails a total investment of up to USD 2 billion, with an initial commitment of USD 500 million for the first five years. This initial phase will witness the establishment of a state-of-the-art, integrated EV facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. With an envisaged annual production capacity of up to 150,000 units, the project aims to be more than just a manufacturing hub; it aspires to become a first-class electric vehicle production engine for the entire region.
Beyond its economic impact, the project promises to create a ripple effect, generating 3,000-3,500 local employment opportunities while fostering gender equality and career advancement for the community. This aligns perfectly with VinFast’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development.
Speaking about the MoU, Ms. Tran Mai Hoa, Deputy CEO of Sales and Marketing for VinFast Global, highlighted the company’s unwavering vision for a zero-emission future. “Investing in Tamil Nadu,” she affirmed, “brings not only economic benefits but also accelerates the green energy transition in India and the region.”
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. TRB Rajaa, Minister of Industries for the Government of Tamil Nadu, lauded VinFast’s dedication to sustainability and welcomed the partnership. He expressed confidence in VinFast’s potential to be a “reliable economic partner” and a significant contributor to Tamil Nadu’s long-term development.
The MoU goes beyond establishing a manufacturing facility. The Government of Tamil Nadu has committed to providing essential infrastructure support, including cleared land and uninterrupted power supply, demonstrating its strong backing for the project. Additionally, both parties will explore opportunities for setting up charging stations, paving the way for a cleaner mobility future.
This project transcends boundaries, bolstering not only VinFast’s global ambitions and the economic growth of Tamil Nadu but also strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and India.
To further establish its brand presence and connect with customers, VinFast plans to unveil a nationwide dealership network across India. This customer-centric approach reflects the company’s dedication to creating seamless experiences and making sustainable mobility accessible to all.
