A relatively unfamiliar car the Touareg, from an illustrious company Volkswagen, a perspicacious mid-range car manufacturer. The Touareg in its highest variant was so far was accompanied by a monstrous five-liter diesel engine created in a hollowed out volcano, chugging out more power than a nuclear bomb, it was the one of the reason to buy the Touareg, which Volkswagen have decided to remove in the new version. With the only good thing about the car replaced, it isn’t something I would vouch for. And then there are the looks, it looks like an enlarged Volkswagen Golf (or Polo).

With a 4.2 liter V8 it only produces 335 BHP, quite less considering the size of the engine. This begs the question what is happening to the rest of the power. Well you don’t have to call your wife to tell her you are reaching home, the engine takes care of that for you by converting the power into noise. But if you are led to believe that it is noisy on the inside you are in for great chagrin, on the inside it is surprisingly quite. The refined driving space, the beautifully crafted instrument cluster and the seating position offer an exceptionally soothing experience. It is almost uncanny how noisy it is on the outside and equally calm on the inside.

The steering is responsive and dexterously lighter than most of the cars I have driven. A serene environment is rendered, when sitting behind the steering and the drive feels sublime. The Touareg is flushed with practical details. I would say it is suitable for anything between driving your kids to school to mild off-roading. In conjunction, it is well suited for long road trips as the drive is effortless and the cruise leaves you refreshed.

If your primary purpose involves you going off-road, this is not the car to buy. Volkswagen claims it is an impeccable off-roader, and it does manage to do quite a lot. But, the car secretly struggles, like a 6-year-old would struggle to work in a coal mine. The soft suspension wouldn’t encourage you to drive enthusiastically, it is quintessentially for a calm cruise down the highway, and it does a commendable job.

Volkswagen have added an electric motor and called it a hybrid and claimed it increases the efficiency. Though every bit matters, calling a car with a 4.2-liter engine with an electric motor efficient seems like calling a double cheese lard burger with diet coke a healthy meal.

There is however another problem, when you are buying a car in this segment, it is quite possible you would like it to make a statement, to stand out, to send a message. For example, if you bought a white Audi Q7 you are telling people that you are a politician or a land lord. If you buy a BMW X6 you are telling people that you are a spoilt kid who bought the most expensive SUV available in the market. If you buy a Range Rover, you are telling people you have made a lot of money in sports. But if you buy a Touareg it doesn’t send a message. It is too pedestrian considering the solid gold price tag. It blends in with the traffic. If you cherish that kind of a camouflage, the Touareg mixes up in traffic like water in milk.

In conclusion if you are looking for a car to run your daily errands in and taking road trips, This is your car. I have to reiterate how good it feels to cruise along in this car. But then I wouldn’t recommend the gas guzzling 4.2 liter variant as the lower variants can do everything you need.
