banksBanks including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and PNB are closed for 3 days in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Two years after Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed the banks to offer doorstep services to senior citizens, India’s largest commercial lender State Bank of India (SBI) announces its doorstep service for such senior citizens, differently abled, visually impaired  and infirm customers.

The new doorstep services will be available within the 5 Km radius of selected bank branch and bank will charge extra ₹100 for services including financial transaction and ₹60 for services not involving any kind of financial transaction.

The list of doorstep services will include – Cash pickup & delivery, Cheque pickup, Cheque book requisition slip pickup, Delivery of drafts & Term deposit advice, Life certificate pick-up and Pickup of Form 15H for Income Tax purposes

The service is available for senior citizens above 70 years of age and in order to avail the services the citizens and infirm customers have to render a medical certificate confirming their condition.

The SBI decision has come after RBI directed the lenders to offer doorstep services to those who can’t physically come to banks due to their health conditions. In a circular issued in 2017, RBI said, “In view of the difficulties faced by senior citizens of more than 70 years of age and differently abled or infirm persons (having medically certified chronic illness or
disability), banks are advised to make a concerted effort to provide basic banking facilities.”
Although, two years have passed since RBI order regarding this issue but most of the banks have not taken any positive action.

  1. This is untrue. I have been to SBI branches and have seen senior citizens not only been made to stand in a queue but completely not heeded despite repeated requests.
