Aviation sector grows sluggishly with 9.1% YoY growth-rate in January 2019

Indian Aviation sector which is mushrooming amid stiff competition registered the slowest passenger growth in the last 4 years.As per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) released report, Year-on-year passenger growth rate was at 9.01% with number of passenger commuting by air falling to 1.25 Crore.

Last time in December 2014, aviation sector registered single digit passenger growth which was at 9.7%. Since 2015 it has always been in the double digits.

As per the data released, aviation industry has seen south in terms of passenger growth rate. The major reason behind this could be end of the tourist season.

With this the market leader in aviation sector IndiGo Airlines, retained it first spot as it carried 53.22 lakh passenger during January 2019, out of the total 1.25 Crore passengers.This was followed by SpiceJet and Air India with  16.66 lakh and 15.30 lakh passengers respectively in January 2019.

While in terms of passenger Load Factors(PLF), which tells about the occupancy rate, SpiceJet was at the top with a PLF of 90.9%, followed by AirAsia (88.4%), GoAir (87.4%), IndiGo (86.4%).

Also GoAir reported best On Time Performance (OTA) with 75.9%t followed by Vistara Airlines at 75.3%, while SpiceJet(69.2%) bagged the third position in terms of OTA. Market leader IndiGo reported an OTP of 64%.

The airline industry paid over 4.76 crore to the over 3 lakh passengers affected by cancellations, delays and those who were denied boarding in January this year.
