On Tuesday, Online grocery delivery platform Bigbasket said the number of new customers on its platform rose by 84 percent in July this year as compared to the month of January, an indicator of the strong growth seen by e-commerce platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TheBigbasket said in a statement, the number of new customers increased by 84 percent compared to pre-COVID levels and the retention rate rose by 50 percent.

It also added, the number of households ordering on the platform has gone up by 44 percent and the total number of times a customer visited the Bigbasket website/app is 55 percent higher than before.

If we talk about the consumer behaviour, this is a clear indication a lot more customers are now shopping for groceries online for the first time, and these customers are not only shopping for monthly groceries but top-ups as well.

Fruits and vegetable category increased by 13 percent, on the other hand, beverages; snacks and branded foods; and bakery, cakes and dairy witnessed a  14 percent, 23 percent and 25 percent.

“Households are adding various indulgence options to cart for home consumption with lockdown closing off external options. Fruits and vegetables were also added to the same cart to reduce multiple outward touchpoints.”

Indulgence categories like chocolates, cup noodles, namkeens and savoury snacks registered 50 percent to 140 percent growth compared to February, as customers are staying at home much more than they used to,
