On June 8, the government announced the roll-out of the facility of filing of Nil GST monthly return in form GSTR-3B through SMS in order to smoothen the compliance process for taxpayers.

This will benefit over 22 lakh registered taxpayers with NIL liability as they will now no longer need to compulsorily log on to the GST Portal and would have the option to file their NIL returns through SMS. The functionality of the SMS facility has been made available on the GSTN Portal with immediate effect and taxpayers will also be available to track the status of returns filed in this way.

India Partner of KPMG, Harpreet Singh, said, “This is a good move by the Government to ease the compliance burden for taxpayers with nil liability. India ranks a lowly 115 out of around 190 countries in ease of paying taxes, and such initiatives are definitely needed to make the compliances easy, less time consuming and in line with global best practices”.

India Partner of Deloitte, MS Mani, said, “Filing Nil returns through an SMS would significantly help smaller businesses as they can now focus on businesses revival”.
