Often criticised for not delivering on its poll promise of creating jobs, the central government has finally started to take the issue seriously. According to the sources, the government is planning to hire for over 20 lakh vacant positions in various positions across the country. The vacancies will include portfolios under central as well as the state government.

According to a report published in Economic Times, the government is keen to first hire for the vacant positions in central ministries, followed by PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings). According to an estimate, the railway sector (world’s biggest employer) has more than 2,40,000 vacancies at this moment.

The labour ministry has initiated the process and in the initial stages, it is creating a report on the number of vacancies needed to be filled in various sectors. Once the list of available, the ministry will then formalise a plan to hire the candidates accordingly. According to analysts, if this initiative is perfectly taken to implementation, the government will address one of the biggest issues, which has brought it a lot of criticism.

Last week, Rahul Gandhi had taken it on the government and stated that the Congress government could not create jobs and the current government is also unable to do so. One of the reasons behind his statements was that the government have been reluctant to fill the key administrative posts in order to cut down on administrative costs. However, the current government seems to have learnt the lesson that providing jobs is a bigger issue than preventing the extra expenditure.

According to the estimations, out of the 20 lakh jobs, over 6 lakh could be at the central level. The labour ministry has written to all the ministries on central and state level and has asked them to compile a report ASAP.

India sees over 1 million people looking to get into the professional world every year. However, according to the current trend, the number of jobs available can only address 20% of the supply. The current government had promised to create 2 crore jobs in its tenure, however, it has just remained a poll promise till now.
