Mobile internet speed in India dropped in January. India is currently ranked 131st in the Speedtest Global Index report published by Ookla. However, India has grabbed the 65th position in terms of fixed mobile broadband speed in the global index. United Arab Emirates(UAE) tops the list.

According to the Speedtest Global Index report published by Ookla, India slipped from the 129th position in December to the 131st position in January. The data available in the global index revealed that India dipped over 3.8% from 12.91 Mbps to 12.41 Mbps in terms of average download speed.

Along with this, the average upload speed also dropped in India. The average upload speed in December was 4.97 Mbps, which dropped over 4.2% to 4.76 Mbps. The latency rate experienced in India, however, remained constant. It is 51 milliseconds, the same as that in December.

These results are sort of disheartening for India because a total of 140 countries were sampled and India is among the bottom ten in the list.

The mobile internet speed global index is topped by United Arab Emirates(UAE) with an average mobile download speed of 183.03 Mbps, which is an improvement over December 2020. The average download speed in UAE during December 2020 was 177.52 Mbps. The second and third positions were grabbed by South Korea and Qatar with an average download speed of 171.26 Mbps and 170.65 Mbps, respectively.

The average global mobile download speed reduced to 46.74 Mbps in January from 47.20 Mbps in December. The average upload speed in mobile devices also dropped from 12.67 Mbps in December 2020 to 12.49 in January. Global latency also increased to 37 milliseconds from 36 milliseconds in the month earlier.

Interestingly, India is ranked 65th in terms of fixed broadband speed in the Speedtest Global Index with an average download speed of 54.73 Mbps that is 1.50% growth over earlier month’s 53.90 Mbps. India’s position has remained unchanged as compared to December 2020. The fixed broadband experienced an average upload speed of 51.33 Mbps in January 2021, which is 1.1% growth over 50.75 Mbps in December 2021, with a latency of 16 milliseconds.

The fixed broadband internet speed list was led by Singapore with an average download speed of 247.54 Mbps in January 2021. The second position is grabbed by Hong kong with an average download speed of 229.45 Mbps whereas Thailand is ranked third with an average download speed of 220.59 Mbps.

On the global fixed broadband speed test front, Ookla’s report reveals that the global average download speed grew to 96.98 Mbps in January from 96.43 Mbps in December. However, the global average upload speed in fixed broadband service dropped to 51.28 Mbps from 52.31 Mbps. On other hand, global latency reduced to 20 milliseconds from 21 milliseconds in the earlier month.

India’s performance in mobile internet is expected to rise in the coming months with the introduction of 5G. India has started 5G trials and 5G service is expected to roll out anytime soon. Availability of 5G in certain countries contributed to the surge in mobile internet speeds.
