Railway minister Piyush Goyal recently announced that the packed food catered by the IRCTC will have have a bar-code which will enable the passengers to directly see IRCTC Kitchen where the food is cooked. The bar-code will also give relevant details regarding the food like where it was packed, when it was packed etc etc.

“All packed cooked food provided by IRCTC in trains will have a bar code, with the number of kitchen and packing time,” Union Railway minister said to the reporters.

The Railway minister announced this new development while talking to reporters. When asked about the roll-out date of this operation he said that the task is huge and will require time for the back-end work and once finished will start soon.

He later added that he has given the instructions to the IRCTC to start working on the aforesaid idea.”My ultimate thought is that each food packet will get a barcode. You can scan the barcode using your phone and can see the kitchen. You can see and decide whether you want to eat the food or not. The food packets will mention the kitchen number and the time and date of packing. If the food is bad, you can file a complaint quoting the kitchen number and other details,” said Piyush Goyal.

Currently, IRCTC caters food to travelling passengers using its 32 Base kitchens. The catering service of Indian railways has been earlier criticized by the passenger for bad packing and poor quality of food. Now the new system if developed will enable the passenger to register complain too, which might lead to better catering services and improved quality of food.
