Reliance Jio has been considering to use satellite connectivity to connect rural and remote area by 4G LTE based voice data and services. It is planning to deploy a unique satellite backhaul based network using technology from US based Hughes Communication (HCIL) and capacity from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), reported Economic Times.

The 4G Telco led by Mukesh Ambani has envisioned to reach more than 400 LTE sites which cannot be connected through terrestrial backhaul services and are in dire need of a satellite-based network. The project is in its deployment phase. Hughes Communications has inked a contract worth ₹70 Crore with Reliance to set satellite backhaul for 4G network in these areas.

The recent trends in Indian telecommunication industry suggest popular usage of microwave to connect towers because of its low deployment cost. Using this technology to connect remote and hilly areas along with island has become difficult making satellite connection to suit the need of the present.

Jio group president Jyotindra Thacker said, “The satellite system is key to enabling our vision of providing ubiquitous and seamless connectivity to each and every part of the country.”

Shivaji Chatterjee, SVP & Head- Enterprise Business, Hughes Communication India says, “On 4G though, Jio is the innovator by far on satellite backhauling…they have taken a bulk capacity of two satellites of ISRO, and have taken our satellite technology which meant for 4G services.Jio wanted a captive network of their own, and is the first in the industry to do this”.

The analysts reveal the inability of satellite to match fibre or microwave although they will suffice in providing each site a network speed of 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps. The satellite network is used by many telecom companies in India but to a small extent.
