In a statement issued on 19 July 2018, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that it will shortly issue new ₹100 denomination bank notes in the ‘Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series’, which will bear the signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel, the current governor of the RBI.

The new notes will be lavender in colour, with other designs and geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse. The dimension of the banknote will be 66 mm × 142 mm.

Two years ago, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the demonetization of the ₹500 and ₹1000 notes, the ₹100 note had been left untouched, and even now the RBI has said that all the banknotes in the denomination of ₹100 issued by the Reserve Bank in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender.

The new note will also carry the motif “RANI KI VAV” (The Queen’s Stepwell) on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. Rani Ki Vav is an 11th century architectural wonder situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat. The 900-year-old structure is a major tourist attraction and was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 2014 by UNESCO.

The RBI has also said that printing and supply of these notes for distribution to public through the banking channel will “gradually increase”.
