The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday imposed ₹500 Crore on German automobile company Volkswagen for using ‘cheat device’ in its diesel cars in India. The green tribunal said Vollkswagen has polluted the environment by using ‘cheat device’.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the German automaker to deposit the amount within two months.
Earlier on November 16 2018, the tribunal directed that the use of cheat device by Volkswagen has damaged the environment and asked the company to deposit an interim amount of ₹100 crore to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The bench in its order also constituted a committee to decide on the amount of fine. The committee consisting of representatives from the CPCB, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, recommended a fine of ₹171.34-crore.

The committee recommended this fine for doing ‘health damage’ by causing air pollution in Delhi due to excess nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

NGT was hearing a plea filed by a Delhi based school teacher Ailawadi and others for the ban on the sales of Volkswagen owing to violation in emission norms.
