Sandeep Kataria, Bata Corporation Global CEO called the Covid-19 pandemic the ”most significant” world event. He unarguably maintained that the world economy and its people have been pushed back by 5-10 years. Though, it is no news that the pandemic has severely impacted almost everything over the last 15 months, but the Bata Corporation Global CEO expressed hope of leaving medical worries behind soon given the ”innovativeness and ingenuity” shown by the human race during this period.

Kataria while delivering the convocation address, stated that there would also be an inevitable rise of the new order. The new order, which will be accepted as a new normal.

It is to be noted that Kataria was invited as the chief guest of the 65th Annual Convocation of XLRI. Besides, TV Narendran, Tata Steel India and South East Asia Company and Chairman was also present along with Fr. Paul Fernandes S J. Director of XLRI.

During the virtual convocation address, he stated that ”When I look at the future with optimism – I am referring to the inevitable rise of the new order, a new normal – an opportunity to recast many of the notions that we have taken for granted over the last 50 years and provide an opportunity like never before,”.

He added that given the covid 19’s impact on the economies around the world, the geopolitical map of the world is changing. In addition to the alteration of geopolitical maps, tech disruptions, global warming and markets, that have been gathering pace over the last decade, are also witnessing significant changes.

He stated that ”India with its demography, stable democracy and the famed Indian resilience and jugaad puts it and all Indians in a great position to gain from these changes,”. Addressing the graduating students, Kataria maintained that the students were graduating at an ”amazing moment” i.e. during global crisis, which will help them develop resilience and critical abilities, which will be needed to thrive in the next 30 years. Corroborating his claim, he stated that ”We will need more leaders and fewer managers”.

During his fiery speech, he optimistically suggested the students to have ”curiosity and the ability to learn and relearn” and stretch targets and advised them to ”be a Javelin Thrower, not an Archer.”
