The textile industries in India generate huge employment for the labour sections. It continues to be the second most promising employment generating sectors in India.

The COVID -19 outbreak leads to a crisis in the industry for the workers who were at least able to earn daily wages to feed their family. The lockdown has left the workers with no other options to earn their living.

The majority of workers hail from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and other states. Some workers were able to reach their hometown before the lockdown but many of them stuck are still stuck in the mills. The mill owners are incurring huge losses due to the lockdown as they need to reimburse wages to these workers without any actual operations in the mill. And it is expected that 1crore job cuts may occur in the textile industry.

The only resort to the workers and mill owners of textile industries

In a webinar on way forward for brick-and-mortar retail, hospitality and textile industries during and post COVID-19, it was stated by CMAI Chief Mentor Rahul Mehta that if no assistance is received from the government either in terms of wage subsidy or revival package there could be a loss of almost a crore of jobs in entire textile chains.
it was also added by him that China has experienced a huge decline in its textile industry due to COVID- 19. The Retailers Association of India also shared the same view and is hopeful for government intervention in the industry for the betterment.

India’s economy is expected to be badly hit by this lockdown various associations has sought relief for the same as the government is the last resort to the situation lately.
