Indian Railways largest recruitment drive on August 9 marked a record of 4 lakh candidates for about 60,000 posts (such as those of technicians and loco pilots) as told in a statement by the national transporter:
“On Thursday, 4.83 lakh candidates – approximately 1.60 lakh per shift (exams were conducted in three shifts) – were scheduled. Out of this, around 3.59 candidates appeared for the exam. This attendance is a record for all RRB examinations conducted so far.”
Ashwani Lohani, Chairman of the Railway Board, conducted a surprise visit at one of the test centers in New Delhi in order to gauge the quality of arrangements made and how the exam was being conducted. As said in an official statement, “every step of the process i.e. pre-exam, during exam and post-exam,” was being monitored from a command center which was visited by the chairman too. This center had access to all the 439 exam centers in 166 cities.
While this was only the first set of exams, next sets will follow in a phased manner till the end of the month. The dates for the next sets are August 10, 13, 14, 17, 20, 21, 29, 30 and 31. Approximately 50 lakh candidates applied for these posts.
This year also marks a big step towards the different vernacular backgrounds of candidates. The exams will be conducted in as many as 15 languages.
Special care has been taken in allotting centers within a range of 500 kilometers and 83% of the candidates have been accommodated. Female candidates and people with disability have been allotted centers within 200 kilometers.
The Railway authority has taken an extra step to ensure that the 16% who could not be accommodated within 500 kilometers, make it to the centers easily. Special trains have been arranged from destinations such as Deoria, Chhapra, Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and, Ara to center cities such as Secunderabad, Bhopal, Indore, NCR etc. Until this time, up to 10 trains have been arranged in this fashion and more will follow for the future exams.
