The Volvo buses in Bangalore have taken traveling experience to a comfort level. The IT city has made several developments in the past and the current government is still working hard to make Bangalore a better place in terms of infrastructure, railways, roads, metros, highways and lot more. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation wants to induct environment-friendly electric buses. A china based company has recently asked to run the eco friendly electric bus on a trial basis for a period of 2 months. The zero-emission Chinese-made BYD bus (K9D) is powered by four ferrous batteries, each producing 540 volts of electricity. The air-conditioned bus can run 250 km on a single charge, seat 29 passengers and clock a maximum speed of 96 kmph.

The trial run of the electric bus route has already taken place between ITPB and Majestic from last 4 months. The period of 2 months was extended to 4 months for a better understanding of the operations. The bus handled 6 trips per day from ITPB and Majestic, over a distance of 30 km. The total cost is Rs. 70 to cover the distance and around 260 people takes the services of this bus in a single trip. The occupancy rate is higher during peak hours which is a normal trend in Bangalore.

An income of Rs. 62 is generated per km which is highly profitable to the Government. The cost of procurement is equally high, somewhere around Rs. 2 to 2.5 crore, whereas Volvo air conditioned buses costs somewhere around Rs. 80 lakh. The more the cost, the more will be the bus fare, making it impossible for the common man to use the electric buses.

The officials are collecting the reviews and soon a conclusion would be derived.
