mandur-village

It has almost been a year since the garbage issue in Mandur district, a village nearby Bangalore has not been sorted out. The area has been chosen as dumping yard by BBMP, without giving a consideration about Mandur residents. The city garbage has threatened the lives of the residents, inviting various diseases such as malaria and flu, thereby making their life miserable. The local politicians and civic agency officials have brokered a deal last year with the villagers. The residents agreed only after Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) committed that no more dumping of waste will be there from June 1, 2014.

The commitment remained only in the papers, as Mandur is still treated the home for waste garbage. The officials lacked in finding a permanent solution, targeting Mandur as the permanent dump solution. The residents lost all the faith in BBMP and had to take a stand by themselves. They prevented hundreds of garbage laden trucks from entering the dump yard, earlier this week. As a result the garbage has been piled up on the road sides, causing nuisance to the passerby and the environment. They have threatened to commit suicide if further garbage is thrown out in the Mandur village.

The dump yard falls within the limits of two village Panchayats — Mandur and Bidarahalli,  a total population of around 20,000 – 25, 000. More than 15,000 villagers have threatened to commit suicide and will be on strike covering the Mandur area. They have blocked all the entries of the trucks to dump the debris on their land. The government tried borrowing a time frame of 6 months, to allocate the dumping of garbage in 4 different locations, but all in vain. The Villagers are too furious to listen to anything and are adamant on their stand.

Hope the new government comes out with a solution to the demands of these victims.
