In a report presented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), it was revealed that some people have been walking long distances in freezing temperatures. Ever since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, more Ukrainians have settled in Poland.

Poland’s Government said that 50,000 more people are arriving nearly every day. Poland is preparing a medica train to facilitate transportation of wounded Ukrainians.

Although countries have relaxed their paper work requirements, people are told to carry passports and birth certificates for children traveling with them.

Despite this, people are waiting in long queues for up to 60 hours, just to cross at border points into Poland, in the freezing weather.

Increasing racial discrimination amid refugee crisis

Over the last few years, Ukraine has become a prominent destination for foreign students to study medicine and related fields. Yet, the situation is made more difficult when, for instance, the reception near the Medyka region becomes problematic due to the fact that refugees are sorted based on their “racial profile,” as Jan Moss, a volunteer with a Polish aid organization, mentions.

The instances of racial discrimination have been reported, to which African Union have responded as, “reports that Africans are singled out for unacceptable dissimilar treatment would be shockingly racist and in breach of international law.”
