14% of foreign medical graduates have qualified to practice in India in the last five years from 2014 to 2018. The Information was shared by Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday in the winter session of Parliament.

The students managed to qualify for the foreign medical exam called Foreign Medical Graduate Examinations (FMGE) to practice medicine in the country. The exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), an independent body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“NBE informed that in the last 5 years (2014-2018), 74,202 candidates appeared for FMGE out of which 10,400 passed the exam,” the Minister answered.

He was answering the question asked by the Amareshwara Naik, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo, Bhola Singh and Sukanta Majumdar on medical graduates who attain the MBBS degree from the foreign medical colleges.

He was further asked whether the government is considering a program to upgrade the skills of doctors, for foreign medical college graduates to get them into practicing medicine in our country.

“A draft on the skill training curriculum for the foreign Medical graduates who repeatedly fail to qualify the FMGE has been prepared. A draft has been incorporated in the curriculum to prepare such students for the exam through self-sustaining MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and Clinical Skills Labs, etc,” the minister answered.

FMGE is held twice in a year – June & December.
