202-year-old Kolkata school to introduce teaching in English

The 202-year-old Hindu school in Kolkata, West Bengal has decided to introduce teaching in English medium. The school has got the state government’s approval to start an English-Medium section at the primary level.

Soumitra Mohan, Commissioner of School Education said: “The approval has been given to start the English-Medium section from the next academic session along with Bengali-Medium,” in the letter to the headmistress of the school.

“The new section will be started with existing resources only if the school authorities feel that there is no need. If they require any additional resources, they need to communicate the details to the school education department within a week,” the letter said.

The 202-year-old Hindu school was founded in 1817 by Scottish Philanthropist David Hare, Educationist Baidyanath Mukherjee, and Scholar RadhaKanta Deb. It is now one of the state-run institutes.

“All state-run schools will offer education in English from the next session to enable students proficiency in English and impart quality education to people who cannot afford private English-Medium Schools,” said West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee.

Kolkata is known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals especially Durga Pujo.
