Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday announced an increase of 5000 seats in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya for the upcoming academic year.

Currently, the Vidyalas offer 46600 seats to the rural children. The addition of 5000 will lead up to 51000 seats available for the children from 2019.

“This is a step in the right direction. This is the biggest-ever expansion of quality education for rural students. This unprecedented expansion of JNVs, nearly free of cost residential schools, will provide more opportunity for talented children from rural areas to get a quality education,” said Javadekar.

The Total number of seats which had been added so far will add up to 14000, including 9000 seats added in the last four years and 5000 for this year. The Government is planning to add 32000 more seats in the next four years.

Navodaya is considered to be the only education system which offers admission to 6th class students through an entrance test. In 2001, it was recorded that 5.50 lakh students appeared for the exam.

Over the years the number of students who have registered for the exam has increased up to 31.10 lakh.

“This reflects the growing aspirations of rural children for acquiring quality education and the Government’s consistent effort to meet this aspiration,” the HRD Minister said.

Further, he added that government is actively considering the idea of developing new Navodaya Vidyalas in each carved out districts and states of India.

it has been noticed that over the past five years the Vidyalas recorded the pass percentage of 97 percent in Class 10 and 12, out of which 87 percent of them secured first division, which is way better than CBSE’s national average.
