344 Private Universities Functioning In The Country: HRD Ministry

The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Monday in the winter session of Parliament informed, As of December 2019, 344 Private universities are functioning in the country of which 71 private universities that have been examined by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the last three years.

The Minister was responding to the question asked by the Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday about the quality and inspection process in private universities of the country.

The state legislature passed an act by establishing a private university on which the respective university has been asked by UGC, statutory body which maintains and coordinates with the standard of higher education, to submit detailed information.

“UGC’s Expert Committee consisting of representatives from the statutory council, concerned with fulfilling the criteria of programs, faculty, financial viability, infrastructure facilities, etc in the Private University in UGC Regulations, 2003. It aims at the establishment and maintenance of standards of private universities,” he said.

As per the reports, 263 private universities have submitted their information to UGC for inspection, out of which 199 universities have been inspected by UGC. Of these 132 private universities have submitted their compliance reports.

“These compliance reports include observation, shortcomings, and suggestions of programs, infrastructural facilities, faculty, financial viability, etc. were sent to the university. Of which 42 universities have submitted their compliance report to UGC, noted by the commission, ” The minister added.

India has more than 900 universities with 404 State Universities, 126 Deemed-to-be Universities and 50 Central Universities.
