The 8,000 candidates who appeared for an examination conducted for 80 accountant posts in the Goa government witnessed all 8,000 of them failing the test.

All the candidates who were graduates were required to score a minimum of 50 marks out of the total 100 marks to qualify. However, none of the candidates were able to qualify, told a senior official on the condition of anonymity.

In a notification statement issued on 21st August by Goa’s director of accounts, it said that none of the candidates who appeared for the initial recruitment exam on January 7 this year, scored the minimum qualifying marks. In October last year, Directorate of accounts had advertised an opening of up to 80 account posts in the common account cadre.

The 5-hour examination contained sections on English, general knowledge and account-related questions fitted into a 100 marks scheme, said the official. The candidates who would have qualified were supposed to undergo a round of oral interviews before the final recruitment procedure.

Pradeep Padgaonkar, Aam Aadmi Party’s Goa general secretary criticised the long delay in the announcement of the results as well as the failing of all the 8,000 candidates. He added that this is a sad commentary on the ‘collapse’ of the state’s education system. He added that it’s a ‘big shame’ on Goa University and the corresponding commerce colleges that produce these graduates.

Widespread criticism has followed the result and overall quality of Goa’s higher education is under re-evaluation.
