AICTE chairman, Anil Dattatrava Sahasrabuddhe has said at an event in Bengaluru that teachers in the higher education sector should be given proper training in order to implement the education policies.

Mr. Sahasrabuddhe who was delivering a lecture at national conference on Indian Higher Education: Challenges of Quality and Brand Building said, “emphasis should be put on training teachers working in the country’s higher education sector for proper implementation of education policies.

Sahasrabudhe was delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of a one-day national conference on Indian Higher Education: Challenges of Quality and Brand Building. The event was organised by the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) .

“Higher educational institutions are facing new challenges and issues. Many students lack access to high-quality education. However, there is a lot of scope for innovation, especially among private educational institutions”, said the AICTE chairman.

“Accreditation has become critical for institutions and it has become crucial if the students are applying to foreign universities. It’s is also important from an employer’s perspective,” said Sahasrabudhe, while pointing to the 2018 Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) circular on NBA accreditation for engineering courses, which put jobs of Indian engineers in Kuwait in jeopardy, as an example.

“AICTE has come up with a model curriculum to be implemented across colleges. This will focus largely on employability rather than employment. We have policies, but when it comes to implementation at the groundlevel, it is the faculty of these institutions that have to be trained,” he added.
He also pointed out the paucity of accredited universities and said how only roughly 20% of the universities in Karnataka are National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited.

A panel discussion on ‘Resolving challenges of quality and brand building’ was also held.
