Taking the trend of keeping unrealistic cut-offs to a whole new level, Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) has out-smarted in the Delhi University (DU) this year. AUD has kept the cut-off percentage for some undergraduate programmes at 100 per cent for students from Commerce and Science streams for those candidates who have not studied inside the National Capital Territory (NCT). The university released its first cut-off list on July 5.

Last year, the state university had decided to do away with the cut-off system and simply released a merit list of students. However, this year AUD has retrieved the old system. To get admission in BA (Hons) with a major in History, Psychology and Sociology, Commerce students from outside NCT will now require 100 per cent marks. In a similar fashion, those from Science background from outside NCT will need the perfect score for BA (Hons) with a major in Sociology.

A total of seven UG courses are being offered by the university —Sociology, History, Economics, English, Psychology, Maths, and Social Science and Humanities. Those from Arts background, though, stand at an advantage as cut-offs for them are four per cent less than for those coming from Science background, and five per cent lower than those coming from Commerce backgrounds — across all subjects.

Back in 2015 too, Commerce students had to touch the cut-off of 100% in order to take admission in BA (Hons) with a major in English, Psychology, Sociology and Social Science and Humanities in the university.

Where AUD is seen as an alternative for many aspirants who aren’t able to clear the sky high cut-offs at Delhi University, for the year, many won’t be getting even closer to it’s cut-off.

A hike of as much as 6.5% is observed in cut-offs for History from 2015 for the general category within NCT (93.5% for those from the Arts background), and about 1.5% for general category students outside the NCT.

Mathematics has seen a hike in cut-off as well- 3% for the general category inside the NCT and 4.5% from outside the NCT. Sociology’s cut-off hike has been of 3.5 per cent and 1.5 per cent for general category students within and outside NCT, respectively.

For Psychology, there is only a marginal increase of 0.25% and 0.5% observed for general category students from within and outside NCT, respectively.

Major in Economics, however, has seen a marginal dip in the cut-off of 0.25% from 2015 for the general category students within the NCT (88.75 per cent for those from Arts background), but for the reserved categories, it has gone up by as much as 5.5 per cent for the SC category. For general category outside the NCT, the cut-off has gone up by 1.25 per cent from 2015.

Nonetheless, there is a reverse trend seen for English. Cut-offs for its general category students within NCT have remained the same as 2015 (92% for Arts background), but for those outside NCT, it has dropped by 1.5%.

July 6-8 have been scheduled to begin admissions on the basis of the first cut-off list. The second list will be released on July 10 by the university.
