After the recommendations made by the Empowered Expert Committee for proving the Institute of Eminence Status to 30 other deserving institutes, the University Grants Commission refused to award the status to the respective Institutes, but apparently, UGC is awaiting confirmation by the govt. to award the status to the recommended institutes.

In July 2018, EEC recommended 11 institutes to reward the tag and then listed another 19 institutes in December 2018.

During a meeting of the UGC, held yesterday, it was concluded that “to seek clarification from the government on whether additional 10 institutes can be considered. A further decision can be taken after receiving clarification of the government” decision was informed by the sources.

The Clarification is needed due to the decision recommended by the EEC, for rewarding 30 institutes instead of the mandatory 20. In 2016, 20 institutes were announced to be rewarded the status, 10 for public institutes and 10 for private institutes.

Financial consideration is also awaited by the government since the institutes rewarded will be provided with ₹1000 grant to help achieve world-class status, also they are provided with greater autonomy as compared to other institutes, they are free to decide their curriculum and fee structure.

The 19 institutes recommended by the EEC includes like Reliance’s Jio University — Satya Bharti University backed by Satya Bharti Foundation of Bharti Airtel group and Krea University in Andhra Pradesh. under the private category, the EEC had suggested names of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, VIT in Vellore, Jamia Hamdard University in New Delhi, Shiv Nadar University, Azim Premji University, Ashoka University, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, O.P.
