The Central Board of Secondary Education has increased the number of evaluators by 40% to ensure error-free evaluation of Board exams. It has been reported that over 30 lakh students are appearing for Board exams this year.

“The move will bring respite to evaluators who are sometimes overburdened with the sheer scale of the copies to be evaluated. Sometimes, commuting to distantly located evaluation centers becomes taxing for the evaluators, most of them being females. Sometimes, we face a crisis of teachers as many drops out in the last minute, which puts additional pressure on the remaining evaluators. We hope to resolve the problem to some extent, by setting up more evaluation centers across regions, says Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE.

“This year the CBSE has allocated more resources towards the evaluation process, which has been designed in such a way that re-checking would be a part of the initial evaluation itself, which will significantly bring down the number of mistakes,” adds Bhardwaj. The Board has also been conducting various workshops across all centers for training evaluators for error-free checking.

“A short-movie and presentations were shown to the teachers, in the workshop, just to make them understand the common mistakes made while correcting the answer sheets. Based on the previous experience, the updated guidelines on the marking scheme has been shared with the evaluators. We are also conducting dummy evaluations to ensure that everyone is on the same page,” said Bhardwaj.

“Some of the most common errors in the evaluation include calculation mistakes while totaling or feeding wrong marks in the system and sometimes skipping over answers,” he adds.

The Board has witnessed various cases where there were overlooking answers, he informs that, it happens when students sometimes answer a question on two different sets of answer sheets, and to avoid such inconvenience students were advised to write one answer at the same answer sheet.

It has also been reported recently, that board will, this year, give special consideration to creative answers presented by the students this year. Bhardwaj noticed the fact that students have been focussing on e-learning as well along with the classroom learning, which would lead them to write creative answers which should be given equal recognition. Hence, the evaluators have been instructed to not deduct marks if the answer is written in a different way other than the obvious one, this will help students to acquire experiential learning and innovative method learning.
