Chandigarh: Proficient teachers, quality infrastructure, but parents shy away from govt schools

Parents have been filing admission forms, application forms and doing the documentation for getting their ward into Nursery School in Chandigarh, a private school they think will secure the future of their child. While Public schools are a ‘NO’ for economically wealthy families.

Harbir Singh Anand, Deputy District Education Officer (DEO) of UT Administration said, “Chandigarh government schools have the best opportunities and infrastructure but in spite that parents prefer to send their children to private schools.”

Parents believe that private schools will elevate their child’s status with an environment that promotes it. Even those parents with no socio-economic background feel that sending their ward to these schools will be good as they will learn English.

Chandigarh Schools are going out of their ways to encourage the kids with free educations, midday meals and free textbooks. For students of class I to V, an allowance of ₹1,206 and for students of class VI to VIII, an allowance of ₹14,022 is transferred to their account to buy notebooks and uniforms. There is an online portal where parents can fill admission forms with easy exams and a school within the radius of their residence.

But despite these facilities, parents of wealthy economic background refuse to send their wards to the public schools. Barely a few parents send their children.

DEO Mr. Anand added, “Our students have performed well in the exams and have been chosen to perform in the PISA Examinations. It’s up to the parents to send their wards to our schools.”

‘We are a country where people are interested in getting a government job but not into government schools as the reputation of private precedes the public’
