In order to promote digital economy, the Indian government has asked all universities and higher educational institutes to accept digital payment. They have told them to collect the payment digitally in place of cash, to collect their respective fees for the upcoming academic sessions.

The HR Minister has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to issue a mandatory notice to all institutes for using digital mode of payment. “All receipts and payments related to the functioning of the institutions including student fees, exam fees, vendor payments and salary/wage payments shall be made ‘only’ through online or digital modes”, as mentioned in the directives sent to university heads.

It also added that “For all students’ service in the hostels, the digital mode should be used for all transactions. All canteens and business establishments on the campus may be encouraged to resort to only digital modes for their receipts and payments using the BHIM app by linking their bank accounts with Aadhaar”.

The government has advised appointing a nodal officer for the same and instructed them to sent monthly report to UGC.
