Delhi government in year 2015 decided to introduce 5 schools in double shifts and since then the no. of schools running in double-shifts have reached to 1,027 in 700 odd buildings across the city. One school operates in the morning shift and another, usually a boy’s school, in the evening.

The government then decided to initiate the schools in double-shift because around 50 number of students were gathered in one class, which created hustle for a teacher to focus on each and every student.

Now the Delhi government is again rolling the education rules. It has been decided to do away with double-shift schools and run the schools in a single-shift.

The state government of Delhi has made many innovative attempts in terms of education since it has come into power. Since, last few months 30 new school buildings are being built and 11,000 classrooms are under construction.

According to an education department official, “At first, room construction had been the priority to resolve the situation in schools where the pupil-teacher ratio was unfavorable, in some cases, with one teacher for 50 students. But with the construction of new schools, the aim is to eventually move double-shift schools out of a single building and make them single-shift . Running double-shift schools is not an academically sound thing to do.”

The aim of converting the schools in a single-shift is to make better use of time and space. “After the classes are concluded in the afternoon, the school premises can be used for sports and co-curricular activities. The hope is to also be able to introduce vocational training programmes in the premises in the afternoon,” the official said.
