The state government has recommended punishable actions against bullying in schools. The actions include withholding of results, imposition of fines, school transfers, suspension and, in rare cases, the expulsion of students.

A committee is instructed by the Directorate of Education to frame policies against bullying and monitor its implementation while panels will also be constituted at the district-level and in all government schools.

According to the circular issued by the DoE circular, the aim of this movement is to “to have an amiable and teaching-learning conducive environment in school”.

An anti-bullying helpline will also be created to protect the children from the practices. According to the DoE  “It must operate confidentially and independently to help students in distress and also report incidents of bullying.”

“School bullying prevention plans” will include enhancing the skills and development of children and respectful behavior towards people and their fellow classmates.

Apart from these punishable actions, other recommendations include sensitisation of students, staff and parents, and initiatives to teach life skills, value education, human rights, gender sensitivity, self-esteem, empathy, interpersonal communication, and how to deal with stress and anger.

It has also been suggested that a complaint/suggestion box be installed in every school and the feedback should be considered and monitored regularly.

Director of Education Sanjay Goel said the committees should be set up within 7-10 days, but did not say when the anti-bullying helpline will be operational.
