The Delhi University is planning to introduce online entrance exams from next session onwards. The Admissions Committee of the university had decided earlier this year that it would have online entrance examinations to ensure that students who have not secured high percentage of marks also stand a chance to study in Delhi University.

“The proposal to have online entrance examinations was made by the Department of Commerce. Some members said the online mode would be difficult for students from far-flung areas who are not well-versed with computers,” said an official.

The official also said it was decided that there would be an offline as well as an online entrance exam to the varsity. The Delhi University is also considering outsourcing the arrangement of exam to the National Testing Agency (NTA).

“It is yet to be decided whether it can be done. The varsity will bring out a notification and subsequently the process will begin,” he added.

Some faculty members have expressed concerns saying it will lead to an increase in the cost of conducting exams and will also put students who are not well-versed with computers at a disadvantage. However, some faculty members have supported the move saying it will help those students who do not meet the cut-offs to realize their dream of studying in the university.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be holding online entrance exams in May 2019. However, the JNU student’s union are not pro this decision. The JNU students union has alleged that the varsity will have to spend more for the exam at a time when it is having shortage of funds.

  1. Delhi University is known for its high standards in teaching students and is also extremely popular nationwide. The university is also known for its sky-high cutoffs. However, it seems there might be some rest for the students, as from this academic year (2019-2020) there are high chances that only scoring high marks in your boards might not be enough as students would also have to appear for an entrance exam. Apparently, the system is going to give equal weightage to both the tiers- the cutoffs and the entrance exams which is a catch for the students. Some of the top ranking institutes in the country that are in DU have had high cut-offs going up to 99.9% only making the aspirant’s life a struggle. But the news that this is not so at all is disheartening and takes us away from admission based on merit.
