Students who are pursuing BTech in National Institute of Technology Trichy (NITT) can now avail a direct PhD in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Both the institutes have signed a memorandum of understanding with this regard. IIT-Delhi has already made a pact with NIT Agartala and NIT Warangal and the director of the Delhi institute further wanted to extend a partnership with the NIT Trichy.

In this scheme, those students have CGPA of 8.00 and above at the end of their sixth semester in NITT, will be given an opportunity to take up the fourth year at IIT-Delhi. They can complete their projects and other research works there. The students who employ good skills and possess sufficient merits in their projects and research activities in the 4th year, can directly join the PhD program at IIT-Delhi without writing the GATE exam or other qualifying exam.

The Delhi institute also said that it shall not collect any additional charges for the transfer of the students from Trichy to Delhi. However, the students have to pay the regular fees in the Trichy. The students will be provided with one-year paid hostel accommodation by the IIT-Delhi.

The scheme adopted will also enhance the students at NITT BTech students in increasing the chances for qualifying for the PMRF fellowship at the IIT-Delhi. Both the institutes will be exchanging the BTech, dual degree MTech students, research scholars, and faculty. These students will be put under a special scheme where they will be permitted to opt the courses based on the credit/ audit. They will also be able to participate in the research and other projects. The IIT informed that the selection for this category will be open throughout the year.

The faculty too will collaborate in performing a joint submission of research and project proposals. They shall also supervise the students and joint research in the disciplines of mutual interest.
