After IIT-Nagpur reserved 10% extra seats for the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) under general category, DU (Delhi University) in the count has also declared to reserve extra seats under 10% Quota Bill from this academic session.

According to the Registrar Deputy Academic, to introduce 10% Quota Bill in the institutions, it has to increase 25% extra reserved seats apart from the existing one.

The Delhi University has declared that it will be reserving the seats in two phases. In the first phase 10% seats will be reserved for this academic session i.e (2019-20) and in another phase 15% seats will be reserved for 2020-21 session.

The reserved seats criteria is as following- 15% seats for SC, 7.5% seats for ST and 27% seats for OBC.

Delhi University Dean- Students’ Welfare, Dr. Rajeev Gupta states, According to official notice released by government the reserved seats for General category that are being increased will be equal to the seats approved in last session 2018-19. The approved seats of both the sessions will be subtracted from the total no. of increased seats and the remaining will be the seats that will be reserved for EWS general category this session.

After the increment of 10% reservations, 10 seats will be increased on every 100 seats, which complies to total of 110 seats. Among the total seats- 50 are reserved for General, 17 for SC, 8 for ST, 30 for OBC and 5 for EWS category.

Not every student, who falls under general category is eligible to apply for the EWS quota.

The candidates, who are eligible to facilitate the extra 10% reservation are-

  1. Who are not covered under SC/ST/OBC or any other category.
  2. Whose family has a gross annual income below Rs 8 lakh.
  3. The student’s family if own following assets will be excluded from the reservation category, irrespective of the required income amount:
  • 5 acres of agricultural land and above.
  • Residential flat of 1000 sq ft. and above
  • Residential plot of 100 square yards and above on notified municipalities
  • Residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the notified municipalities.
