The HRD Ministry has announced to fill the vacant posts of Vice Chancellors at three central universities, they are Jamia Milia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Motihari and Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha.

One of the official members of HRD Ministry department said ” We had sent a letter to the election commission  asking for their approval and they have informed us that it is a procedural issue and we can go ahead with it. We will be sending it to the President for a final approval.”

It i is to be noted that according to the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for Election Commission of India’s Model Code of Conduct, ‘Government bodies are not to participate in any recruitment process during the electoral process.”

The Delhi government had recently issued a letter to the CEC, Sunil Arora that central universities are not authorised  to place any recruitment during the time of elections. By approving the grant of HRD Ministry for recruitment of VCs, is again observable to see another issue to be raised soon but the Ministry has argued that the selection process was over before the code kicked in.

The three candidates, who have been shortlisted for the post of VC in Jamia Milia Islamia are:

  • Nazma Akhtar, Institute of Educational Planning and Administration
  • Furqan Qamar, Secretory-General of Association of Indian Universities
  • S.M Ishtiaque, Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

The post has been vacant since the Jamia Milia University’s chief Talat Ahmad quit last year.
