At a four day seminar held at S Radhakrishnan International School (Malad) on July 11, S Gopalan, a senior faculty member of The Valley School (Bengaluru) asked the following question about today’s education scenario:

“Learning is not a chore, so why do we consider it to be? Not all students are academic achievers, so why do we expect them to be?”

Organized in collaboration with Times NIE and the Krishnamurti Foundation, 400 educators and presents graced the occasion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the school. Experiential, innovative, interactive and creative methodologies were encouraged to redefine education. Chairman of Bombay Cambridge Gurukul, Vikram Patel expressed the need of the hour; “Since decades, education has been a business of developing the intellect, which has adversely affected the society. Knowledge is no longer liberating and we need to explore something beyond that.”

One of the segments of the seminar, titled ‘Education without Borders’, educators brainstormed and discussed at length the meaning and importance of a holistic education. They converged on the conclusion that focusing on humanity and mentally impacting the students is imperative while moving towards mankind’s progress.

Meenakshi Kilpady, principal of DR S Radhakrishnan International School (Malad) added, “In these 25 years, we’ve tried innovative ways to determine what is true education…It’s not just about making a career and earning money. We thought of bringing educators together on a common platform to define education again. We need to determine the kind of knowledge we need to provide for students to have a meaningful existence.”
