The Government of Andhra Pradesh has announced that teaching will now be held only in ‘english-medium’ across all the private, government-aided and unaided colleges. The rule will be applicable from the beginning of academic session 2021-22. The teaching and learning for all Undergraduate (UG) level courses will be strictly held only in english.
Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) in an official statement over this decision has said that introduction of english medium at UG level will definitely increase the career possibilities of students once they graduate. The medium of education becomes an important factor when an student applies for jobs or higher education.
According to the Department, a total of 2.62 lakh students got admissions in degree colleges in the year 2020-21. Out of this, only 65,900 students choose Telugu language as the medium of education. The large number of students who opt for english medium tends to get more benefits then compared students choosing local language.
Back in September 2019, the Andhra Pradesh government announced that it will gradually change the medium of education from telugu to english in all government schools. The school education department will introduces syllabus for all subjects in english while maintaining the provision of mother tongue telugu to be a compulsory subject.
The primary aim behind this conversion is to make sure that students of the state matches the standards of students from other parts of the country where english is a more prominent language. It is seen that companies arriving in colleges as recruiters prefer candidates with multilingual skills where english is given most importance.
Not only students but teachers in schools also need to develop proficiency in speaking and writing english. Few months back in January, the government of Andhra pradesh collaborated with University of Cambridge to organise training sessions on Latin english proficiency for teachers and students of the state.
