European Union grants 180Cr to develop schools in India

At an event held in Delhi on 13th June, Tomasz Kozlowski, the ambassador of EU to India stated that the EU is soon to sanction 25 million Euros (180 crore Rupees approximately) of its 80 million (577 crore Rupees approximately) for the development of schools in India. It is being granted to the Indian government’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

This sums up EU total support to education in India up till know as over 520 million Euros (currently valued at 3747 crore Rupees approximately) in a grant funding, an EU statement said.

The EU grants have been contributing in developing better infrastructure for schools in rural areas along with providing and maintaining necessary facilities. it has also led to increase in the number of students enrolling, training faculty and bridging the gap of inequality.

Kozlowski said EU was the first development partner of India in education. Through its participation in the 155 districts initially selected under the District Primary Education Programme in 1994, India in the central beneficiary.

To this grant, Ajay Tirkey, Joint Secretary of HRD, extended his gratitude for the generous initiative and solid commitment that has lasted for 23 years. He also mentioned that this partnership has contributed immensely in seeding new ideas and initiatives.
