It has been reported that the Federation of Schools Association of Maharashtra has called for a shut down of Schools in the state on Monday, February 25, 2019. This has been called to address their protest regarding the Right to Education Act reimbursements, school safety guidelines, and also demanded action against the parents who refuse to pay the fees.

It has been agitated over the fact that schools have been demanding the government shall pay for the reimbursements for the students admitted under the RTE Act.

Rajendra Singh, representative of Independent English Schools Association said, “This year it isn’t only about the reimbursement we are yet to get but also the other issues related to education. It becomes extremely difficult for school managements to function when there are 10-12% parents defaulting on fee payments when we are already reserving 25% seats for students under the quota. We want some form of action against parents for nonpayment of fees. Additionally, the onus of an accident on the school bus has been put on the school principals which is very unfair. The state has not done enough to lay down safety guidelines for students in schools.” The group had submitted the list of demands to the government on January 24.

Speaking about the shutdown, Education Minister Vinod Tawde on Friday announced that the state will be releasing Rs 407 crore for the reimbursements for admissions done under the RTE act as demanded by the schools of the state. “The concern of principals being held responsible for accidents on school buses has already been rectified in the past. Similarly, we have given instructions on safety issued by the Supreme Court to all schools and junior colleges in the state,” said Tawde.

Since no written confirmation has been released by the government, Singh said “We have not been given a written assurance or a notification. So our protest will continue.”
