Foreign students to be charged same fees as Indian Students for studying PhD in IIT Delhi

During the launch of the International Ph.D. Fellowship Programme (IPFP), it was announced that Foreign Students pursuing their Ph.D.’s from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi will now be treated the same as their fellow Indian students, they will be offered an equal amount of scholarships and will be allowed to pay the same fees as the Indian students.

This was announced to enhance the institute’s international ranking. Since the institute was granted the ‘Institute of Eminence’ status last year and was also ranked 172 at QS World University Ranking, it was reported that there has been no progress recorded regarding the international students and faculty and student-teacher ratio.

Looking at this, the Institute started doing progressions and was reported to be hiring more international faculty.

“All international students admitted to PG programmes in IIT-D will pay the fee on par with Indian students. Under IPFP, international students selected for Ph.D. admissions to various programmes will be eligible for fellowships on par with Indian Ph.D. students. The fellowships are open in all academic departments, centers and schools of the institute,” Dean, Alumni Affairs and International Programmes, Sanjeev Sanghi said at the launch, where various dignitaries from the various foreign embassies were present.

Under the International Ph.D. Fellowship Programme (IPFP), 500 Ph.D. fellowships will be provided to the international students holding a foreign passport for the next five years.

“As of now, foreigners pay 2,000 US dollars per semester, but now they will have to pay as much as the Indian students which is about Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 per semester. They would also get a fellowship amount of Rs 31,000 per month, and be eligible for the Research Scholar Travel Award, whereby they would get Rs 1.5 lakh to travel for international conferences,” said Sanghi.
