FTII students go for indefinite hunger strike over entrance tests and academic courses fee hike

Pune: Entrance exam fee steep, profit making exercise, say FTII students

India has been taken over by the students protesting for their rights and demands. Starting with the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) students protest against Hostel Fee hike, followed by IIMC (Indian Institute of Mass Communication) Journalism students protesting against 10% hike in tuition fees, has now reached FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) students who are on indefinite hunger strike against fee hike.

Four Students of FTII, Pune started the indefinite hunger strike on Monday against the gradual increase in fees of entrance tests and academic courses. They claimed the academic course fees have gone up by 10% since 2013.

The students accused the Institution of turning the entrance exams into profit-making activity, which has made financially weak students away from their entrance exams. As per the Right to Information (RTI) obtained from the institution, 1.30 crore and 1.17 crores were made in 2017 and 2018 respectively by IIFT through entrance exams.

The entrance fees increased from ₹2,016 in 2016 to ₹4000 in 2017, now stands at ₹10,000.

Bhupendra Kainthola, Director of FTII has called the hunger strike “totally unjustified” and that new scheme of entrance test fee has been formed to serve the best interests of the students. He further said, the decision of a 10% hike in the fees is an old rule and not followed by the institution anymore.
