In accordance with the National Super Computing Mission at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the Institute built a supercomputer at a cost of Rs 32.5 crore called ‘Param Shivaay’, which is of 833 teraflop capacity, and was inaugurated by the honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, February 19th 2019. The Prime Minister also released a  postal stamp and postal stamp album on the hundredth anniversary of the institute.

The benefits and services provided by the super-computer can be availed by Scientists, teachers and research students, government research laboratories in adjacent engineering colleges to IIT-BHU. It has been reported that over 40% of the power of the computer will be consumed by the students of Navodaya Vidyalaya.

The various benefits provided through this computer include social issues such as irrigation schemes, traffic management, health, an affordable drug.

The computer includes 1 petabyte secondary storage and appropriate open source system and application software suite using 223 processor nodes, 384 GB per node DDR4 RAM, parallel file system, including CPU and GPU.

The first-ever supercomputer was launched in 1991 called ‘Param 8000’.

Currently, there are various super-computers that have been established as supercomputers by the institutes such as Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology has Pratyush, National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting has Mihir and IISc has SERC-Cray.
