The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai has abandoned all the in-person lectures this year. This institute has become the first in the country to do so in the view of covid 19 pandemic.

Director Subhasis Chaudhuri said that they would teach the students “purely in the online mode so that there is no compromise on the safety and well-being of the students” in the next semester.

The director mentioned the Facebook page that “The COVID Pandemic has made us at IIT Bombay rethink the way we impart education to our students. To ensure that our students begin the academic year without further delay, we are planning on extensive online classes details of which will be informed to all students in due course of time.”

The institute reflected that this is the first time in 62 years that the academic year is set to kick start without the students on campus. Following this, the other IITs may also continue to do so.

To facilitate this ease over the coaching, the director petitioned for the donations, to help the students from the weaker sections of the society. These donations will aid them in their digital components such as purchasing laptops, and internet data plan to access the virtual classes.

He also wrote in his Facebook page that “We do not want a single student to miss out the learning experience for the lack of money. We have estimated that we need about Rs 5 crores to help those needy students. Our alumni have committed a good amount of support, but that is not enough for all these needy students and I solicit through this message your donations, however small it may be.”

The heads from all departments conveyed the information to the students and enquired them with the facilities.
