The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has launched Dr. Kiran C Patel Centre for Sustainable Development for resolving local and global solutions through interdisciplinary research. According to the IIT, the center will establish a local and global network of leading experts and researchers who will be studying sustainability and researching about resolving issues of water, pollution, waste management, energy, natural resources, and climate change.

The center will research about sustainability and related issues of societal importance and promote cost-effective and sustainable solutions through their institute-industrial programmes. and technology-transfer programs.

The Centre was launched on January 31, 2019, and has been funded by the philanthropist Dr. Kiran C Patel, a cardiologist based in Florida, USA.

The Center will be responsible to undergo technology-transfer for finding sustainable solutions to NGO’s, local governments, and will be collaborating with the industry for resolving sustainability challenges, and initiating startups on sustainability with IIT Gandhinagar Entrepreneurship Cell by providing Seed Grants.

Speaking about this center, Prof Sudhir K Jain, Director, IIT Gandhinagar, said, “Dr. Patel’s exceptional generosity for an institution with which he has no earlier connection touches us deeply and inspires us greatly. The gift will enable our faculty and students to work on developing practical solutions to major sustainability challenges through the integration of advanced research, traditional knowledge and field understanding.”
