Premier institutions like IITs and IISc (Bangalore) are rumoured to initiate centralized counselling and admission for MTech and PhD programmes. This procedure will be similar to how these institutions proceed for undergraduate courses. On the 21st of August, the IIT Council is going to hold a discussion over this proposal. This meeting is going to look at this proposal for counselling and admissions process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) along with the Joint Entrance Examination (advanced)in IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

GATE is annually conducted by IITs and IISc in an alternate rotation. Post the announcement of the GATE results, candidates are required to go through an additional round of tests/interviews by the institutions of the student’s choice. This process might result in the clashing of timings in some cases. The candidate has to run from one institute to the other and any clash will force the candidate to make a choice between seats at the two institutions.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) along with other government agencies will provide financial assistance to these institutes which will, in turn, run various post-graduate programmes. The GATE scores are used for their admissions.

The proposal also adds that due to the above-stated measure, apart from the financial stress and inconvenience, students end up suffering and losing seats despite a good rank in GATE. Therefore, a process of centralized counselling and admission procedure is being proposed.
